Rockets had taken to publicly strolling the roads, appearing to take up space so easily, as if they had suffered no loss in the last battles. It was a show of strength. The League couldn't stop them from taking Petalburg, and it couldn't stop their caravans from coming and going because the League couldn't coordinate effectively enough to interrupt their logistics. League had very few wins on their side in terms of these little skirmishes, but Robin was interested in a different strategy. She wouldn't assault groups of them, but rather the loners who went to and fro.[break][break]

She walked through the path in the shadows, along the treeline, and without her pokemon out. She made herself as small as possible with the intention of finding smaller groupings of Rocket to assault. [break][break]

Before long, there was someone walking alone. [break][break]

Robin didn't wait for her to walk closer; she rolled a pokeball like a bowling ball onto the path, releasing Sableye in front of the incoming Rocket. Sableye used mean look to keep her from fleeing.

maki's team is not in the greatest shape. there's been scuffles here and there that have worn them down, worn her down, and it's left her on edge. it's not just her life on the line here, but the reputation of her family. if she gets caught, so do they. while they might be able to continue operating in kanto, which is already under rocket control, their finances would still take a massive blow as consumers world-wide boycotted their products. it's for this reason that she's disguised herself, going so far as to equip a working gas mask in case an opponent decides to try paralyzing her or putting her to sleep.[break][break]

this has left her somewhat on edge, after continuous conflict, and exhausted her somewhat. her reaction when the sableye appears is... muted, to say the least. she simply stares at it, brows furrowed. "...you might as well come out, then," she calls, "wherever you are."[break][break]

she doesn't have any fairy types. damn. she grabs a ball off her belt and sends out the pokemon inside. a weavile appears, already glaring nastily at the sableye. "screech." the weavile lets out an unearthly wail, the noise meant to drive into and weaken the sableye. i can't keep suffering these losses, maki thinks to herself. since she lost first round in the gauntlet she's been edgy. first the masquerade, then being trapped on that ship for days on end... then the gauntlet itself. she won't admit it, but her patience with herself is wearing thin.

Screech is a good move. Robin keeps herself from flinching only because her sense is dulled. Sootopolis left her with about 30% permanent hearing loss - that fucking Celesteela METAL SOUND, her own Sinistea's z-move to enhance sound attacks - and the very thought of it makes bile rise in her throat. This is clearly a Rocket, and the fact that they aren't running, that they aren't fearful, fills her with rage. Why should she (or anyone) be left with the overwhelming feeling of loss while these terrorists run free? [break][break]

Rangers taught her to play fair, but playing fair has got them nothing but pillaged cities and bodies and bodies and bodies and bodies. [break][break]

"Don't hold back," she orders from behind the tree, Sableye picking up on the order despite the ringing sound of Weavile's screech. Sableye uses shadow sneak - but not on the Weavile. Sableye dissolves into shadow and attempts to strike the masked traveler from their own shadow.

she expects the attack to fall on her weavile, but it never comes. instead, the sableye leaps out of her own shadow, claws raised. she only has time to raise an arm in defense as it strikes, and she feels it cut through cloth and skin, drawing blood. it's not a serious injury; still, maki regrets that she'll have to inform Rose Soleil that she needs yet more healing. soon enough the other young woman might start wondering if she's doing it on purpose as an excuse to see her.[break][break]

she takes a few quick steps back. "icicle crash." despite the blood dripping from her arm, her tone remains cold and impartial. she lifts her gaze to look at robin, meeting her eyes. some say eyes are the window to the soul, but what robin will witness here is... nothing. "...you can't fight on two fronts. attacking me leaves your own pokemon exposed." her weavile summons up a massive icicle, and lets it loose overtop the sableye.[break][break]

maki tears off part of her other sleeve, wrapping it around the gashes she just received. "unless you want me to come after you." is that a faint hint of amusement? "...but i don't think you want that. it wouldn't be much of a fight." the threat hangs heavy in the air, words unspoken; fight me with your pokemon, because if we went toe-to-toe, i would win.

The sight of blood should satiate something in Robin, and for a moment it seems to, but the unaffected disposition of the Rocket only fans the flames. Robin couldn't kill Rockets on the shore of Sootopolis before Kyogre's tantrum - for lack of opportunity alone - but she would rectify this here. [break][break]

Sableye shrieks underneath the ice attack, but worse still, Robin finds herself feeling the chill. How is her target so unfeeling? [break][break]

"Mega evolve," she instructs from the tree. Sableye's form changes, the gem expanding, and as it does, she swings out with a power gem at Maki. [break][break]

"I could take you," Robin declares. "You think you can just stomp all over people and take their livelihoods and their homes and nothing's gonna happen to you? You think you're invincible? You Rockets are fucking leeches. Parasites."

maki doesn't care. why should she? anyone who gets in the way deserves what's coming to them. if they'd all just fall in line, behave the way they're expected to, they wouldn't have to suffer. they do it to themselves. if their lives supposedly have so much value, then they should be more careful not to do things that will get them killed. the answer is so obvious to maki that she simply doesn't respond, instead focusing her attention on on robin's sableye.[break][break]

her weavile gets in the way of the blow, taking it for maki. immediately, it faints, collapsing to the ground. its job here has been done; it protected its trainer at risk of its own life. in one swift movement, maki calls it back and sends out her next pokemon. this time it's her bisharp, rushing forward into battle without a second thought. that sableye might have mega evolved, but it still took a screech earlier on that should leave it vulnerable. without waiting, her bisharp charges, and so does maki, but they go in different directions. the bisharp aims an iron head at the mega evolved sableye, while maki rushes at robin with the fervor of a trained fighter, her stance leaving no noticeable openings.[break][break]

Sableye does his best, but even a neutral type match-up can't protect him from the assault of the Bisharp, knocking him out cold as the strike hits. Robin knows, logically, she needs to pull a second pokeball out, but she's so stunned at the sight of the Rocket charging her directly that she's frozen. She had attacked from the shadows, had the upper hand, had the violent and malicious intent that she hadn't had in prior altercations with Rocket that should've kept her from the weakness of half-measures, but none of it matters. [break][break]

She succumbs to the moment of panic and it renders her helplessly human, like a deerling in headlights. [break][break]

She flinches at the stomach feint, hands coming up instinctually (slowly, too slowly) to block - which leaves her arms in the perfect position to snatch and hold behind her. "Fuck you!" She snarls, tries to wring her arms out of the hold. "You know what you are! Some lowlife sapping everything good out of my home." She's trapped. The anger should help her move but her attempts to free herself from the hold is inhibited are uncoordinated. [break][break]

She has no upper hand in the fight, and she doesn't believe this criminal is capable of guilt. "I hate you," she seethes instead. She will go down fighting, even as her attempts to kick out get her nowhere. Her gaze is set ahead on her fainted Sableye, whose empowered state had not protected it from his fate... as the rage that strengthened her fighting spirit failed to protect her from this one.

the way she holds robin's arms behind her back is likely rather painful for the other girl. maki's done this hundreds of times in training before, and a few times in live combat situations. most people aren't equipped to handle human combat. they stick with their pokemon instead, and that leaves them vulnerable. this is exactly why maki urged robin to battle with just her pokemon. just another fool from the league, maki reflects. she doesn't understand how the world works.[break][break]

robin spits out her words. "...i've done nothing to you but urge you to fight fairly," maki says, her voice muffled behind her mask. "i have never touched your home... are you sure you're not the one responsible for your own suffering?"[break][break]

she doesn't give robin time to answer. instead she takes hold of one of her arms and bends it in a way it shouldn't bend. the movement is quick, precise, practiced just like everything else. if it continues, robin's arm will surely break. "do you understand now? i'm giving you one last chance to battle me properly. show me you have the strength to back up your convictions."

Robin's breath holds at the base of her throat as Maki pulls her arms back tight. She fights the urge to cry out, up until Maki brings it to an angle she knows will get pushed to a break if she's not careful. "Fair?" Her voice strains. "You haven't touched my home? All of you terrorists have forced the people of Hoenn to live in fear, you kill and you pillage and you hurt." [break][break]

Her heart feels like it's beating out of her chest. She's caught, and it feels exactly like it did on the water routes last August, that masked Rocket (Zev Harcourt ) that nearly abducted her, the very one whose voice she recognized in Sootopolis who now is partnered with that otherworldly demon, Necrozma. They were more than a bunch of two-bit thugs. They had world-ending power on their side, and their agenda was one of bringing hell to earth. She couldn't be a victim again. Rocket had to pay. "You're all the same," she says with renewed vitriol. [break][break]

She earned her birthright in Sootopolis and unlocked her psychic powers. She will win. Fate demands it. She swallows the bile of this Rocket offering her the opportunity to prove herself in proper battle, a proposition steeped in condescension. She feels like she's being entertained, like a child, but she won't fuck it up - learning this Rocket has some twisted interest in honor (or in mocking her) is enough of an advantage for her to abuse. She's been through enough of the gym circuit in preparation for this very moment. "I swear... I won't lose a proper battle." It's soft enough that it might be a statement just for herself.[break][break]

If Maki lessens her grip, Robin will find the opportunity to release Klefki from his silver star sticker adorned pokeball; if not, Robin will kick herself out of it enough to brush the pokeball from her waist instead.

maki releases robin and steps away. she's already at a disadvantage here in terms of damage, but she's not going to let her own exhaustion show. her bisharp is ready and waiting. if she's going to win this, she'll have to take some risks. if she loses... well, she still has some tricks up her sleeve to aid her escape.[break][break]

she won't waste time now. "guillotine." her bisharp charges, blades extended, bearing down upon the klefki. it's an all-out attack, one that will leave it open if it happens to miss... but if it does hit, it will even the playing field between them. with guillotine, type match-ups don't matter. it's handy for a situation like this, where none of its other attacks will do much damage.[break][break]

she's frustrated, but it doesn't show on her face. she needs to be better than this. no more failures. too many, and her life no longer has any value. she will not become just another yukimura fuck up. the fate of the family rests on her shoulders, and it's heavy, but... without it, she is nothing.

Released, she staggers away from Maki and scurries into the path, putting as much distance between her and Rocket as she can. She won't be captured again. She turns back to face her opponent in time to see the guillotine strike. She pulls out Klefki's pokeball with the intent of pulling him out before the attack can land, but she's not fast enough, arms sore and partially numb from the hold they'd just been trapped in. Her clumsiness costs her Klefki, the fairy collapsing to the ground under the Bisharp's strike. [break][break]

She sobers, grim as she returns him to his capsule and sends out Sinistea instead. She's not been on talking terms with the teacup after her disobedience during early Sootopolis, but the possessed teacup has come around after its z-move nearly cost Robin all of her hearing. Sinistea spills out into the path, between Robin and the Bisharp. [break][break]

Robin brings a supporting hand to the shoulder of the arm that was nearly broken, but she fights a wince as she commands her pokemon. "Tera," she says simply. Sinistea needs no further instruction, entering the stellar terastallization and following it up with a fearsome tera blast at the Bisharp. [break][break]

As much as Robin wants to kill Maki directly - and she still will, given the opportunity - she knows Sinistea won't bring an attack against a person. Sootopolis proved that much. [break][break]

"You talked about fairness," she calls out from the road, wary of Maki trying to close any distance between them. "Do you do this for fun? Do you think its fair to occupy cities? To hold civilians against their will?" She can't figure this Rocket out - and she's positive none of them can be figured out to begin with, that they're all psychopaths or sociopaths or lowlife scum or some other kind of failed specimen. The Rocket scientist that had produced the freak-of-nature Type: Null had showed her just how little these people cared of ethics. [break][break]

bisharp is blasted back by the impact of the tera attack, and falls to its knees. it's never been much good with defense, maki thinks, and it's already been active today. she calls it back, and considers releasing her malamar, but hesitates. this looks like what she's heard of the stellar tera type... meaning it'd be better not to utilize her own tera abilities until after this one is knocked out. so instead, she sends out her empoleon. she tosses the ball lightly up into the air, watching as it makes an arc before releasing the steel penguin and returning to her hand. "mist."[break][break]

slowly, mist creeps over to cover the area, obscuring maki and her empoleon from view. "...'fun' has nothing to do with it," she states plainly. "rather... it is their failure to act within their own interests that put them in danger." silently, she moves from her previous position, creeping to where the mist will hide her figure. her empoleon does the same, though it's a bit less stealthy. "those who defy team rocket will be punished. and those who defy the league... are also punished." maki doesn't much care for arguments over "ethics" or "morality". the world works one way, and no amount of fighting will change it. freedom, or security: you can have one, but not the other. this is true no matter where your allegiance lies. "if i were to defy rocket, i, too, would be discarded. but that's not why i do this."

The presence of mist sets her on edge. "Protect yourself," she instructs, and Sinistea withdraws to improve her defenses. Robin has no idea what to expect of the mist, but Sinistea's not well-equipped for massive, wide attacks like her Snorlax is, so Sinstea needs knowledge of her opponent's whereabouts. [break][break]

The way this Rocket speaks of punishment is baffling. "If anyone can be punished, why are you picking the side that hurts more people?" She doesn't want to be on the side of this Rocket by any means - anyone who can justify the brutal conquering is deeply sick - but the confusion is hard to tolerate. The emotionlessness and the matter-of-fact tone come across as psychopathic and apathetic, a combination that is clearly lethal and probably in high supply among Rocket's numbers. [break][break]

It makes it easier to consider her opponent as subhuman, given Robin can't find humanity in her actions. "You pretend to have a reason," she asserts, "but there's no justification for this. You're sadistic. That's all it is." She should have practiced more close quarters combat herself, more hands-on self defense. Gwyar taught that. Hell, Noah's whole thing was fighting. Why did she focus on using her pokemon? She wanted to bury this Rocket with her own two hands, but the other was too competent; Robin had to confine herself to playing it safe, playing it 'fair.' Where her enemy was competent and clear-headed, Robin's own power came from her willingness to accomplish her goal at all costs - even if it killed her.

maki is no different than her pokemon. they're all wind-up toys, waiting to be given the order before they allow themselves to move, to breathe. they're weapons, not living things of their own right. that's all she's ever been; the little girl in her dream was destroyed by her own hand, after all, and she hasn't seen her since. spoonfed her family's worldview, maki will likely never think beyond the scope of her own world. she doesn't have to, as she trusts her parents to do the thinking for her. while aware she's being used, she believes wholeheartedly that it's necessary, that it's deserved.[break][break]

all of this will be lost on robin, who will never know anything of maki's reasons for living, the inner world that is cold and numb not out of want, but out of necessity. "...if that's what you must tell yourself in order to accomplish your goal," maki says. there's no need for her to argue. she has nothing to prove to this person, other than that she has no intention of backing down. her empoleon comes flying out of a blind spot in the mist. coated in water, it throws its body at robin's sinistea, hoping to reach it before it can be countered.
